Iolani Palace had electricity in 1886, four years before it was installed at the White House. King David Kalakaua stopped in Menlo Park NJ on his around the world tour in 1881. He met with Thomas Edison and asked him to help bring electricity to Hawaii. Five years later, he sent someone to Hawaii that electrified Iolani Palace. Soon the streets of Honolulu were lit by electricity. The king's actions resulted in the formation of Hawaiian Electric Company.
