Tesla Motors invited me to attend the exclusive premier of their Model S electric car at their Menlo Park store on April 8, 2009. The Tesla Roadster is the only performance electric vehicle currently for sale. It has a range of 244 miles and goes from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds on electricity alone. But it's an expensive niche-market vehicle. Now they are preparing to enter the mainstream market with what could be the first mass-produced highway-capable electric vehicle, the Model S luxury sedan. This video was shot on location at the event. For Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village, Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park is coming to life in a new way to visitors. The 1879 New Year’s Eve electric lighting public demonstration would only be a small sample of what was possible. Work began immediately to re-create, on a full scale, an electric distribution and lighting system of a New York City neighborhood. By December of 1880, the activities at Menlo Park reached their pinnacle with over 8 miles of underground wiring, connecting hundreds electric lamps on poles. All of this was powered by newly engineered equipment in the central power plant, part of the Menlo Machine Shop, and controlled from the Main Laboratory. As Jim Johnson, Curator of Historic Structures and Landscapes, notes, you’ll need to stop by the lab during your visit to Holid...
